About Us

Patrick Asay is a Certified Personal Trainer, a Reality-Based Self Defense instructor, a Martial Arts Practitioner, and a fitness enthusiast.

Patrick Asay has trained with some of the best martial artists in the world.  He has earned a black belt rank in Taekwondo from a highly competitive and reputable martial arts organization:  the International Martial Arts Council (IMAC), through one of its schools, the Southwick Black Belt Academy.  He has basic, intermediate, or advanced training in several martial art styles, including Krav Maga, Grappling, JiuJitsu, Wing Chun, Boxing, and Kickboxing.  He has trained with Grandmaster Stanley Witz, Kickboxing legend Bill "Superfoot" Wallace, Don "The Dragon" Wilson, and others who are members of the International Martial Arts Council.

Patrick is currently studying Japanese Jujitsu and Brazilian JuiJitsu under Sensei Brian Eckman, 4th Degree Black Belt in Shito-Ryu Karate and 6th Degree Black Belt in Japanese Jujitsu, and Brian Brock, a Brazilian JiuJitsu Instructor in Sensei Eckman's school.

In addition to Sensei Eckman's school, Patrick is a proud student of Grand Master Anthony Southard, undoubtedly the greatest expert in his field and probably the best martial artist he has ever known, notwithstanding the fact that Patrick has met and trained with some of the world's most renowned martial artists.  Grand Master Southard is trained in multiple styles at high black belt levels and is the founder of the Southard Combat System.  It is very humbling to know him and have the opportunity to learn from his great knowledge, wisdom, and experience.

Applied Martial Arts began in Hau'ula Hawaii, in an area where there were blatant demonstrations of racial tension.  Patrick developed a curriculum for practical street combat, started a school dedicated to self defense, earned respect from the locals, and launched the success of Applied Martial Arts.  His unique Reality-Based format became very well established and is now used to teach law enforcement, community-outreach programs, and special interest groups the fundamentals of Self-Defense.

Patrick is now establishing himself as a prominent figure in martial arts with his new location in Rexburg, Idaho.  He also works with the city of Rexburg, teaching seasonal Self Defense classes for the Parks and Recreation Department.

We, at Applied Martial Arts, focus on teaching self defense.  What sets Applied Martial Arts apart from other schools is the street application of martial techniques, which have been derived from various different styles.  The course focuses not only on the physical techniques but, more importantly, explores the legal and psychological consequences of violence.   We teach self-awareness religiously.  We use current statistics and trends to teach you about violence.  To overcome your fear of violence.  To prevent violence.  To use violence when necessary.  To deal with the consequences of violence rationally, logically, and in a civilized manner. This course will improve your physical mobility, balance, speed, and it emphasizes the power of technique over a seemingly stronger opponent/attacker.  The curriculum employs reality-based simulations to maximize your preparation for the unpredictable arena of street violence.  If you want practical skills applicable to real-life situations, GIVE US A CALL!

Patrick is also a competitive Powerlifter and continues to explore all the facets of physical fitness to help others enjoy both getting and being in great shape. He believes that anyone can be happier, look better, and obtain greater self-confidence through physical activity, in whatever form suits them best. Patrick is certified under American Fitness Professionals and Associates (AFPA), whose standard is the highest among personal training organizations. Patrick has helped people in cross training, gaining mass, weight loss, extreme sports, rehabilitation, etc.   Everybody is different, so those “one size fits all” programs you see in magazines, infomercials, and over various websites CANNOT accommodate a unique individual. That’s why Patrick has developed a way to provide free personal training services (contact us for more info). He wants nothing more than to be able to share his knowledge with the world. His ultimate goal is to help anybody who wants to be in better shape accomplish his or her goal.
